As To The Bible Condoning Slavery

The mission at the time Jesus lived was to change individual hearts, not to change the wholesale structure of a man made government system. And the mission was not to set up a kingdom on earth at that time, but set men's hearts in the direction of Christ's redemption. And when the heart of man is changed, then all the evil systems of government that man creates will be changed, and removed. Jesus's contemporaries were longing for God to become King, and set up a Kingdom on Earth ... which was not to be at that time. When Jesus returns he will establish His Kingdom at that time.

The Kingdom of God does not come with observation; nor will they say. 'See Here!' "For indeed, the Kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17:20 & 21) Jesus shocked the people with this new concept. They thought the Messiah's new Kingdom would be physical and external, but Jesus taught them that it was spiritual and internal.

When coming to an understanding about the Biblical view of slavery, it it first of all necessary to remember that it is not part of God's plan to bring prefect conditions to this present Earth. God intends to destroy the Earth (2 Peter 3:10). His one and only purpose for the world as we now know it, is to call out a people for himself.

The word 'condone' means 'to pardon or overlook voluntarily' (Merriam Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary)http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifhttp://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

In that sense, the Bible does not condone it, because it does not overlook the slavery issue. The Bible deals with the matter, but does not advocate starting a revolution over it. So the Bible does not condone slavery, but deals with it as a fact of man's sinfulness. The Bible thus lays down rules as to what to do when there is slavery. The Bible is also very clear that a slave who runs away, does not have to be returned to his master (probably because if a slave runs away, then he is being treated improperly by his master). Deuteronomy 23:15,16 says, "THOU SHALT NOT DELIVER UNTO HIS MASTER THE SERVANT WHICH IS ESCAPED FROM HIS MASTER UNTO THEE: He shall dwell with thee, even among you, in that place which he shall choose in one of thy gates, where it liketh him best: thou shalt not oppress him"
